Food, Farming, and Flipping Omelettes! 29 Jan

Monday 23rd – Friday 27th January 2023 saw a hive of activity at the Lincolnshire Showground, as each morning we invited a class of primary KS2 students to attend Farmhouse Breakfast Week.

Farmhouse Breakfast Week involves students experiencing a series of workshops designed to celebrate Lincolnshire’s finest produce. Using local, healthy ingredients to make wholesome breakfasts, children learnt the importance of starting the day fuelled with energy.

Activities included porridge making – looking at the various healthy toppings you can include, looking at seasonality, sausage and cheese muffins with the Ladies in Pigs team, egg sorting and weighing, omelette making and learning all about the farming story, looking at the type of grains used in bread-making and more.

The eggs for the event were kindly donated by Victoria Elwess at The Egg Stop, Heapham and Waitrose sponsored the oats and milk.

Students and teachers got stuck into all the activities –

The Children had a great day learning about products grown in our area and how we can use them to make some breakfast foods. Memorable hands-on learning!

-Ingoldmells Academy

What a fantastic day! Our children have loved learning all about healthy breakfast and how many of them are sourced locally. We certainly have a few omelette fans now. Thank you!

-Monks Abbey Primary School

Did you know?

Over the week:

  • 60 omelettes have been made
  • 150 eggs have been cracked
  • We have welcomed 154 students
  • 154 bowls of porridge were made
  • 154 muffins were baked
  • We had 19 activity leads, volunteers, and helpers across the week
Awesome Facts!
  • The oats grown within Lincolnshire produce enough grain to make 400 million bowls of porridge!
  • 1 metre squared of wheat grown, produces 25 pancakes!
  • Lincolnshire farmers farm 73% of the land area of the county
  • Lincolnshire houses more than 12% of the country's total poultry population and produce 500 million eggs each year.
  • Lincolnshire grows 11% of the country's wheat. Enough to make 2 billion loaves of bread each year

We’ve had so much fun over the week and thank you to the schools for taking part and making it so worthwhile!

We could not have put this fantastic event together without the wonderful support of our volunteers and activity leaders. A huge thank you to:

  • Ladies in Pigs - Debbie Wilson, Natalie Kirkham, Sue Millener, Toni Bagguley, Nicola King, Becca
  • Ruth Wilkinson
  • Victoria Elwess – The Egg Stop Heapham
