Head of Finance - Job Description
Salary: £42,000 (depending on experience)
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Location: Lincolnshire Showground
The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society as the new Head of Finance. This is a pivotal role within one of the region’s most prestigious agricultural societies, responsible for leading the finance function and sustainability of the charity. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Head of Finance will provide strategic financial leadership and manage the Society's day-to-day financial operations.
About the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society
Established nearly 150 years ago, the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (which is a charity) plays a key role in supporting and promoting sustainable agriculture, horticulture, forestry, conservation and environmental awareness in Lincolnshire. The Society hosts a range of events, including the renowned Lincolnshire Show, as well as Countryside Lincs, Farming Conference, Food and Gift fairs and several educational programmes.
The Society’s activities contribute significantly to the local economy and serve as a platform for learning, innovation and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities
The Head of Finance will be responsible for the overall financial management of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, with duties including:
Strategic Financial Leadership:
- Lead the financial planning, budgeting and reporting processes to ensure sound financial governance.
- Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the Society’s long-term goals.
- Provide insightful financial analysis and reporting to the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee.
Financial Operations:
- Oversee daily financial operations, including processing income, expenditure and payroll.
- Prepare monthly management accounts, cash flow forecasts and performance reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Implement robust financial controls, policies and procedures to safeguard the Society's assets and resources.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Lead the preparation of annual budgets and cash flow forecasts, ensuring alignment with the Society’s strategic priorities.
- Monitor financial performance against budgets and provide regular updates to the CEO and Board of Trustees.
Statutory Compliance & Reporting:
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of statutory accounts and lead the year end audit process.
- Liaise with external auditors and ensure the Society remains compliant with all relevant financial legislation and regulations.
Risk Management:
- Maintain and regularly assess the risk register to mitigate financial risks to the Society.
- Oversee procurement processes, including tenders and ensure compliance with the three quote system for major purchases.
Leadership & Team Development:
- Supervise and mentor the Finance Executive, providing guidance, support and opportunities for professional development.
- Create a collaborative and high-performing finance team, ensuring best practices are followed and promoting continuous improvement.
- Act as a deputy to the CEO, if their absence.
Support for Events & Initiatives:
- Play an active role in supporting key events such as the Lincolnshire Show, ensuring financial oversight and reporting for these projects.
Qualifications & Experience
The ideal candidate for this role will be a highly skilled and experienced finance professional, with the following qualifications:
Essential:
- Proven experience in senior or strategic financial management, preferably within charity or agricultural sectors.
- A solid understanding of financial planning, budgeting and reporting processes.
- Expertise in using accounting software, such as Sage and Xero.
- Strong knowledge of charity governance and accounting principles.
- Experience managing financial risk, procurement and compliance with financial legislation.
- Excellent staff management skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead, develop and motivate teams.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly and concisely.
- Proficiency in IT, including financial reporting and presentation software.
- Recognised accounting qualification (e.g., CIMA, ACCA, ACA) or relevant experience.
Desirable:
- Experience in the events industry, with a willingness to support the financial planning and execution of large scale events.
- A commitment to the values and mission of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society.
